A Prayer Message: Relationship with God
Prayer is communication with the Living God. The key to effective prayer is relationship with God! When we know God and trust Him, it is easy to expect great things of Him.
In our day-to-day lives, when we have a need, we are more likely to confide in people we trust. When we need advice or help, we are likely to seek out people who are wise and experienced in our area of need. Relationship with that individual or a recommendation from a trusted friend makes it easier for us to approach that counselor for advice or help. We go there with the expectation of receiving an answer to our problem.
So should it be with God. God has a history with us; even before we saw our need of Him in our lives, He was there. He planned all our days, before one of them came to be… (Psalm 139:13-16). Our Heavenly Father knows us and loves us like no one else. Because He created us, He alone has the perfect solution to all that we will encounter. As we cultivate our two-way friendship with God, we will find in Him a trust that cannot be shaken. It will become easy for us to run first to Him with our joys and our problems, because we will consider Him our closest friend.
Someone once taught me these simple principles of prayer:
- Submit to His Lordship. Ask God to help us silence our own thoughts, desires, and the opinions of others, which may be filling our minds. (2 Corinthians 10:5, Proverbs 3:5-6).
- Resist the enemy; use the authority which Jesus has given us, to silence the voice of the enemy (James 4:7, Ephesians 6: 10-18).
- Expect an answer. When we have shared with God, we need to wait for Him to answer, expect to hear from Him (John 10:27, Psalm 69:13, Exodus 33:11).
Remember, as we spend more and more time with Jesus, our confidence in recognizing His voice becomes easier; … the voice of a friend.
