.: Why We Worship :.
From the beginning of time until God declares time to be no more, the desire of God for all of creation is to commune together with Him. In essence, worship is communion with the living God. The Bible says that the very heavens declare the glories of our God. Our desire is to join with all of creation in that glorious declaration.
Worship, above all else is the activity of heaven! What is God really looking for? He wants a people whose heart is towards Him. In Isaiah and again in Mark 7:6, the Word of God declares, "This people honoreth Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me." God is looking for hearts and lips that agree. He is after hearts that are turned toward Him.
It is a fact of human nature that we will become like that which we gaze upon. That which has our affection will soon be our master and we will be like that which we worship. As we worship, we can say with Isaiah, "I see the Lord...." Worship will then cause us to see ourselves and we declare along with Isaiah...."Woe is me...and send me." As we see Him, we are changed from glory to glory to glory and are candidates to fulfill our destiny. We become like the One we worship!
Do we worship God only when the atmosphere is right? Do we worship only when the music "moves" us? No, the Psalmist said, "I will extol thee, my God, O King, and I will bless thy name forever and ever. Everyday I will bless Thee; and I will praise Thy name forever and ever." (Psalm 145:1,2) How often do you worship Him? Worship should be our daily lifestyle.
Our worship of God must also be based upon something much more reliable than how we feel! The temptation for us is to give way to the old lie that if we "do it" and we don't "feel it" we must be pretending and not real. Never give in to that lie! The psalmist David again and again commanded his soul to line up with what was truth. "I WILL praise the Lord..." "His praise SHALL continually be in my mouth..." Are you getting the picture? We must take control of our spirit and our feelings will follow our affections.
Paul Waitman Hoon in his book, "In The Integrity of Worship," says it this way, "...it is easier to act one's way into a new way of feeling than to feel one's way into a new way of acting...." If you are waiting for your feelings to lead you into the deeper things of God, stop waiting! We worship because He deserves it! (Psalm 63)
During corporate worship, there will always be a magnitude of differing expectations. The truth is that the expectation of true worshipers will be met whether the songs are right and the mood perfected or not. How? Their heart is towards God and He will be found of them!
